5 Most Expensive Meats in the World
Meat is widely consumed in the world as it is a rich source of protein, essential amino acids, bio vitamins, minerals and iron. Most of the nutrients present in meat are not available in most vegetarian diets. Despite all these benefits, some meats are very expensive and only a few people can afford to buy them. Below is a list of 5 of the most expensive meats in the world.

By: David Jackmanson
1.Beluga Caviar: Beluga caviar is made from Beluga sturgeon fish eggs, which are very rare. The Beluga sturgeon fishis found in the Caspian Sea, Black Sea and Adriatic Sea. Obtaining the roe takes a long period of time as beluga sturgeon take up to 20 years to attain sexual maturity. The eggs come in a variety of colors ranging from diamond white to black. The value of the eggs increases with lightness, with the Almas caviar that is diamond white in color being the most expensive. A bite of Beluga caviar costs a minimum of $2000 in most restaurants. Light eggs are served without any accompaniment while darker Beluga might be served with potatoes, on toast, besides crème fraiche and in whites of a boiled egg.
2.Fugu: Fugu is a Japanese puffer fish and one of the most dangerous foods in the world. The fish produces tetrodotoxin, which is a harmful toxin that produces both fatal and pleasant effects. When this toxin is consumed in low doses, it produces a pleasant tingling sensation. On the other hand, a large amount of the chemical causes paralysis and death. Fugu is expensive because Japanese chefs who prepare the delicacy undergo thorough training and rigorous testing before acquiring a license. The fish lives in the Pacific Ocean region near Japan and United States does not permit Fugu importation. Therefore, you can only enjoy a plate of Fugu in Japan at the cost of $100 per plate.
3.Pata Negra: This meat is derived from a free roaming Iberian pig. The pig is bred in controlled conditions and legally protected to avoid imposters. After weaning, the pig is fed on a barley diet and then it is released into Oak forests. The pig grazes freely on roots, acorns, grasses and herbs in the forest. The pig is taken back to the ranch before slaughter and fed on acorns only. The large amount of acorn in the pig’s diet leads to the formation of a high content of oleic acid in the meat. This oil helps in improving the health of nails, skin, heart and hair. The meat is cured for 12 to 36 months after slaughter, resulting in an expensive nutty meat that cost between $96 and150/lb.
4.Kobe Beef: This beef is from the Wagyu cattle found in Kobe region of Japan. These cattle are fed on diets that are rich in beer and saki. The cows are also given daily massages, to smooth and relax the muscles and skin. This results in smooth marbled meat that melts upon cooking, producing a unique sweet flavor. The meat costs approximately$300/plate in most restaurants.
5.Filet Mignon: This meat is the tenderest beef cut, making it the most expensive steak. The meat is boneless and contains a little fat as it is cut from the cow’s tenderloin rear. The meat has a tender texture and a strong flavor. Filet mignon is expensive since a single cow produces approximately five pounds of the fillet. Filet Mignon costs approximately $26.00 per pound.
