Do It Yourself Hair Treatments
There are a wide variety of hair treatments that you can do in your own home. Majority of at-home hair treatments can be done by using products you already have in your cabinets.
No matter the type of hair you have, there is a DIY hair treatment for you. Whether you have hair that is oily, frizzy, dry, or damaged, you can help your hair look and feel healthier in your own home. DIY hair treatments not only prevent you from having to go to a salon, but can save you a lot of money.
Deep Clean with Vinegar
If you are a frequent user of hair products, after a while they begin to accumulate on the hair. The products will begin to weigh the hair down and can cause your hair to start to look dull. By using apple cider vinegar, you can get a fresh head of hair that looks like it has never been touched by hair products.
After shampooing your hair you should apply a single tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to your hair. You could also combine it with your shampoo to get an even better distribution, especially if you have longer hair. Rub the vinegar into your scalp well and let it sit for five minutes. Rinse the vinegar, then condition as normal. Your hair may have a funny smell, but that will go away after another wash or two.
Deep Clean #2 – Baking Soda
Another frequently used ingredient for an amazing deep clean on hair is baking soda. Baking soda is made up of sodium bicarbonate, which works to break down anything that is acidic.
For this treatment you will mix 1-2 tablespoons with a little water until you get a thick paste consistency. You can add more baking soda or water to get the amount of paste you desire. Once you get the amount you want, you then massage the mixture into your damp hair and let it sit for fifteen minutes.
When time is up you then rinse your hair and shampoo as normal. This treatment can be done once every two weeks if needed.
An itchy scalp that may have flakes or dandruff can be seriously aggravating. Luckily, there is an easy at-home treatment using lemon juice and olive oil that can help combat these agitators. The lemon juice works to strip any dry flakes from the skin, with the olive oil working to moisturize skin that is newly exposed.
You should mix two tablespoons of each: lemon juice, olive oil, and water. You then gently massage the mixture onto your damp scalp, letting it sit for twenty minutes. When time is up, you simply rinse and shampoo as normal. This treatment can be applied once every other week for optimal and long-term results.
Oily Hair Treatment
A super cheap ingredient that can be used to help with oily or greasy hair is cornstarch or corn meal. These two work by absorbing any and all excess oil in the hair and on the scalp.
This treatment is easy and only requires you to sprinkle cornstarch or corn meal onto your hair. You can do this by either putting it into a salt/pepper shaker or a similar container, such as a container that glitter or seasoning comes in. You simply sprinkle a tablespoon of the chosen ingredient over dry hair/scalp until it is all gone.
Wait ten minutes, then brush through your hair. You can use this treatment once every other day.
Add Volume to Lifeless Hair
Limp strands can be a bummer, but can easily be perked back up with a simple at-home treatment.
Get a bowl and mix up the following ingredients:
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 small avocados
- 1/2 cup of honey
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
After mixing well, apply the mixture to your entire head of dry hair. This treatment takes quite a bit longer than others, and has to be left on for up to two hours, or until it is completely hardened.
Once hardened, you can rinse, shampoo, and condition as normal. This treatment can safely be done once a week if needed.
Make Dull Hair Shine
Hair goes through a lot. It is hot-styled, has tons of hair products applied to it, and can subject to outdoors pollution. All of these factors can leave hair looking extremely dull and with zero shine. The lactic acid in dairy products help to take away dirt and other pollutants, while the fat content moisturizes the hair.
All you need to do for this treatment is to gently massage half a cup of plain yogurt or sour cream into your damp hair. Let the treatment sit for twenty minutes, then rinse with warm water, then cold water. After rinsing you can shampoo as normal and re-apply once every two weeks, or as needed.
Tame the Frizz
Frizzy hair was rocking in the 80s, but now it’s just a nuisance. You can easily get those frizzy locks under control with this at-home treatment.
Take half of an avocado, mash it up into a paste, and apply it to damp hair. Let it sit for fifteen minutes, then rinse. If you also wish to moisturize the hair, you can combine the avocado with 1-2 tablespoons of a natural moisturizing ingredient such as mayonnaise or sour cream. You can use this treatment once every other week.
