Fitness Retreats – A Treat for the Mind and the Body

By on August 10, 2012

Personally, the word “retreat” in a recreation sense conjures up images of Rambo alone by himself in the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, or running off to join a monastery. Activities that are mostly mental instead of physical are what typically characterize a retreat.

But with so many people living urban lifestyles, especially in the developed world, the hectic pace of city life provides numerous mental distractions and also manages to make living healthy that much more of a challenge.

Cities typically offer not only fewer active jobs, they offer higher incomes and a wider variety of food than would be expected in areas with lighter population densities. Couple that with work districts and residential areas that make walking to work out of the question, and you have a serious fitness issue at hand affection urban centers across the globe.

What is a Fitness Retreat?

Fitness retreats offer the mental relaxation that comes from being away from city life, with fitness programs that help promote physical well-being. A typical fitness retreat would be located in a remote area, though there are numerous exceptions.

One advantage they offer over  other kinds of fitness programs is they are freer from distractions compared to many urban alternatives. Being able to concentrate on your fitness program brings about numerous benefits including but not limited to better program adherence and timelier results.

Another advantage of these retreats is their group setting. Being in a group fosters camaraderie, as well as competition- making for more motivation and a funner experience than would be possible if you worked out alone.

The mental health benefits of exercise programs are also enhanced by being on a fitness retreat. That way, you come back to your regular working schedule not just feeling better, but looking your best to boot.

Things to Consider

Depending on your location, there might be different options available for fitness camps. There are programs for children, teens, adults, and seniors, as well as programs for those with lifestyles that require unique solutions. Programs are based on a dizzying array of philosophies, from martial arts to Pilates.

Of course, no single fitness retreat would work for everyone. Research before you decide on a program, as these are typically expensive and you would have to stop working if you were to enroll in some programs.

As always the effectiveness of these fitness retreats is only as good as the participants make it. Poor follow-ups cause many participants of these programs to fall off the wagon as soon as they get back to their regular day-to-day activities.

Another kind of fitness retreat you might want to consider is one that you plan for yourself. Take a hike or go biking with some friends. Explore parts of your hometown that you haven’t seen yet. The options are really only as limited as your imagination allows.
