Five Tips for Travelling During Pregnancy
It’s great to plan a getaway during your pregnancy. After all, once the baby arrives, travelling will never be as easy as the pre-baby days. Enjoy planning your trip, and keep in mind these five tips for a safe, fun travelling experience while pregnant.
Timing is everything!
Although many women travel safely well into their third trimester, it’s probably a better idea to book a trip for sometime in the second, when your energy levels are at their peak and morning sickness is past. It’s also a good idea to make sure that your trip doesn’t conflict with any scheduled pregnancy tests or doctor’s visits.
Comfort counts!
Keeping comfortable during your trip is important for you and your baby. Make sure you wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing, and pack flat soled walking shoes if you plan to do any sightseeing. Dehydration is not only uncomfortable, but extremely dangerous if you are pregnant, so stay well hydrated. If the water in the area where you are staying is questionable, stick to bottled water, and skip the ice.
If the weather in the area that you are staying is hot, you may want to call ahead to your hotel or resort to make sure that air conditioning is available. Most resorts have it as standard, but some older hotels may not.
Watch what you eat.
We aren’t talking about calories, but about upset stomach, or worse, food poisoning. Local cuisine may be tempting, but make sure the food you eat is properly cooked and hasn’t been sitting out for too long. All inclusive vacations are great for pregnant women because most or all of the food is included in the price, so you won’t feel bad eating for two. Just make sure that you get the freshest offerings from the buffet, since food that has been sitting out for a while may start to spoil, and could lead to tummy troubles.
Plan appropriate activities.
Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t have fun on your holiday, but you may have to skip some activities that put you and your baby at risk. Stick to safer activities, such as snorkeling instead of scuba diving, and don’t attempt anything too dangerous or strenuous. Check for fun activities at your resort to further minimize your risk of injury.
Relax!
