Get Your Mind Right to Get Your Diet Right
Several years ago, I started to get serious about improving my mental and physical health. I realized I was fully responsible for the state of my mind and body. I wanted to feel good. I wanted to alleviate the guilt that comes with knowing we are not taking good care of ourselves, yet continuing to make unhealthy choices. You see a lot of tips about how to pick foods, how to eat and they are all great and serve their purpose. But, when it comes to long-term success with healthy eating, you need to get your mind right because that is where it all starts; you need to prime it to make the right choices.
Get a Stress Reduction Plan in Place
If there is one thing that will derail our healthy eating habits, it is stress. We had a particularly bad day at work, our kids are driving us crazy, we are rushing around like a chicken with its head cut off. Food gives us an emotional boost and during these times, nothing is more tempting than gorging on junk food to take the edge off. By finding ways to deal with stress effectively, you can prevent your mind from going to that place, that place where you no longer care about being healthy, that place that just wants to feel better instantly without thinking of the consequences, that place that is not thinking about the guilt you will experience later for that binge.
Now, you are not perfect and you will have your moments, it is okay. We just want to work on reducing them as much as possible. Meditate, do yoga, exercise, or anything else that helps you deal with your stress more effectively; more effective ways to manage stress will reduce the binges and the consistent unhealthy food choices.
Get Clear on Your ‘’Why’’ and Remind Yourself of It Often
There is a reason behind everything we do, everything we want. If you have the desire to eat healthier and be healthier overall, there is some benefit that you think you will get. Get really clear and really specific with those benefits. A major reason why many of us fail to make significant, long-lasting positive changes in our life is lack of clarity and fuzzy reasoning on why we want to make these changes. Without this clarity, we lack the motivation—something that we need to be constantly cultivating—to do the things we need to do to get where we want to be. We fall prey to laziness and falling back into our old habits. If you want to eat healthier, why? If you want to be thinner, why? If you want to be happier, why? When your ‘’why’’ is clear, making better food choice will not feel as difficult all the time.
Be Forgiving and Remember to Think Long-Term
You are going to have your times when you slip up in your journey to better eating habits. Be forgiving of yourself when this happens and resolve to make a better choice next time. Do not berate yourself for your weakness and give up altogether thinking you do not have what it takes to make permanent changes to your diet. Each day is a new day. Remember that you are not trying to drop some quick weight for an upcoming event; you are looking to make changes that will affect how you eat for the rest of your life.
