Despite how good it may feel, spending too much time in the sun isn’t going to benefit your skin in the long term. Sun damage will occur sooner or later, and usually in the form of freckles, age spots and excessive wrinkling. Skin rejuvenation techniques help to reverse these conditions and restore your skin back to normal.
Here are a few of the more common techniques used to help rejuvenate sun-damaged skin.
Specialized laser treatments help to eliminate sun spots and bring the skin’s tone back to where it used to be. Depending on the type of lasers your clinic or doctor use, you may notice some skin irritation or you might not notice any.
For laser treatments that produce some redness and swelling, you may want to book your appointments on a Friday. This way, you’ll have the entire weekend for it to settle down before you head back to work. Just be sure to ask why kind of an effect the lasers have when you first book the appointment.
Microdermabrasion is another technique that dermatologists use to try and rejuvenate sun-damaged skin. During this procedure, fine crystals are sprayed onto your skin, then they’re sucked up along with the offending skin particles with a little vacuum.
The goal of microdermabrasion is to remove parts of the top layer of skin and to stimulate new skin growth underneath. You can also purchase DIY microdermabrasion kits, but they aren’t as effective as having a professional do it.
When you opt for a chemical peel, you’ll be having a chemical applied to your skin, so that it actually causes the skin to blister and peel away. Once the procedure is completed, you will basically grow new skin that is free from the same sun damage as was on the original skin. The healing time for a chemical peel depends on the depth of the peel, which is determined by your doctor.
Prevent Future Damage
Whether you get one of the common skin rejuvenation treatments or not, it’s still a good idea to limit sun damage in the future. When you go out in the sun, make sure you wear a sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB rays, and contains a proper moisturizer. It’s wise to wear at least a high SPF moisturizer on all days of the year, cloudy or sunny, winter or summer.
It’s also wise to wear hats, sunglasses and perform all of the other actions suggested when you are trying to steer clear of the sun.
