The Art Of Hypnotherapy: How Does It Work?

By on October 30, 2012

Hypnotherapy is a special type of therapy that is performed whilst the subject is in hypnosis. It is used to cure a range of illnesses, disorders and other mental issues. The art of hypnotism was first introduced by somebody called Franz Anton Mesmer in the 1700’s. It has come a long way since it was first introduced. Today, there are many active hypnotherapists throughout the world; dramatically changing the way our minds work for the better.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, a mental state whereby the subjects are physically relaxed. Hypnosis is normally achievable through a series of suggestions and instructions. Everybody is different, and some people are more susceptible to hypnosis than others. Studies suggest that around 25% of people will find it very easy to be hypnotised, whereas about 20% of people simply won’t allow it. Effectively, if you don’t want to be hypnotised, you won’t be. The subject has to allow the hypnotherapist to guide them towards a state of hypnosis.

The existence or credibility of hypnosis is not debated by scientific evidence or theories. The first scientific evidence to conclude hypnosis’s existence was found only last year. However, after all these years, science is still unable to come up with any conclusion to effectively explain how it actually works.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

Phobias, mental illnesses and disorders are all potentially curable through hypnotherapy treatment. All of these mental issues are held in our subconscious mind. The problem is that we can’t control our subconscious mind, but hypnotherapists can. In a state of hypnosis, your subconscious takes over. At this point, hypnotherapists can change the thought patterns in our subconscious.

Once you enter the state of hypnosis, a hypnotherapist will then ‘suggest’ ideas into your subconscious. For example, if you wanted to give up smoking, the hypnotherapist would ‘suggest’ the behaviour of somebody that doesn’t smoke. Your craving and your desire for smoking would be erased.

Does it Actually Work?

There are countless amounts of evidence that points towards the effectiveness of hypnotherapy. A meta-analysis of 72,000 people was performed by researchers at the University of Lowa. It stands out as the most convincing indicator of hypnotherapy’s effectiveness. It compared the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for quitting smoking to other stop smoking techniques. Hypnotherapy was revealed to be the most effective out of all other treatments. It was 3 times more effective than nicotine replacement and 15 times more effective than when using only your willpower.
