The monthly visitor all women get at some point has lovingly been referred to as ‘the red monster’, ‘the curse’, and ‘Mother Nature’s revenge’. In most ways, periods are no fun for anybody, and most women can’t wait for them to be over.

The truth is, that while they are uncomfortable and sometimes really painful, your menstrual cycle can be beneficial and has its own advantages.

When you have a regular period this says that your hormone levels are fine and regulated. This is good because when hormones are imbalanced it can lead to weight gain, moodiness, acne, fatigue, increased cramping and pain, and problems getting pregnant. When your hormone levels are right, you will experience a regular sex drive, increased energy, and a generally good overall mood.

A regular period can keep you from getting fat or gaining excessive weight. A regular menstrual cycle prevents the body from creating an excess of estrogen. When a woman’s body has a hormonal imbalance of too much estrogen, the body does not burn fat as it normally would and retains fat, especially around the waist and middle.

Regular periods are a sign of a healthy thyroid. This is good news because the thyroid is in charge of controlling your metabolism as well as other cell functions in the body. If your thyroid was acting up you could experience weight gain, fatigue, and depression.
