What Conditions Can a Chiropractor Treat?

A growing number of people are turning to chiropractic care in an effort to reduce or eliminate many different physical ailments.  Chiropractic is a discipline that focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing conditions that relate to the various nerves, muscles and bones of the body, known as the ‘neuromusculoskeletal system’.

What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the manual manipulation of different joints in the body, with the main focus being the spine.  The chiropractor uses his hands to perform very highly controlled movements, all designed to reduce pain, restore mobility and joint function, or all of the above.

The chiropractor gets your medical history, current issues and lifestyle information on your initial consultation.  From there, he will perform the adjustments he feels will correct whatever is bothering you.  Adjustments might also be performed with a small adjusting tool for a more gentle approach.

What Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?

There is no recipe or formula for why anyone would need to see a chiropractor.  Everyone is different and what affects one person might have no effect on another.  Here are some of the common conditions that chiropractors treat on a regular basis.

  • Back pain
  • Headache
  • Neck pain
  • Knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Hip pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Elbow pain
  • Allergies
  • TMJ
  • Stress

More than 90 percent of chiropractor visits deal with head, neck and/or back pain, but the other conditions listed are treated, too.  How a patient gets to the point of needing to go in can vary widely.  Carrying around excess weight, car accidents, sports injuries, arthritis and work injuries are all common reasons.

Many of these symptoms make it almost impossible to carry on a regular lifestyle, which is one reason  chiropractic care can be so valuable.

Does It Work?

For the most part, chiropractic treatments will provide relief to the pain and discomfort you are feeling.  Everyone is different, and not everyone will have exactly the same experience, but chiropractic is a gentle, drug-free, non-invasive way to heal the body that will only grow in popularity.

Many chiropractors advise patients to continue on with occasional ‘maintenance’ adjustments after they have begun to feel better.  Getting a monthly tune up will keep everything in alignment and will help to prevent a recurrence of the original problem that landed you there in the first place.
